iPhone 5s will be hard to find at launch warn networks

iPhone 5s will be hard to find at launch warn networks

Low stocks have been blamed for Apple’s decision not to offer pre-orders for the iPhone 5s.

Sources at US networks speaking to AllThingsD have warned that inventories are far lower than what they had expected.
“We will have grotesquely unavailable inventory,” one network source told the site. Another called shipments “extremely disappointing”.
Apple’s bricks and mortar stores are also likely to be short on stock. According to reports, around 70 to 80 per cent of new iPhones are sent to Apple’s own stores.
However, if supplies are as low as networks have alluded to, they may also be low there too.
The second source is reported to have said that while stocks are much lower than expected, demand is also down. Much of that is down to the popularity of the iPhone 5c.
Apple has remained quiet on the issue of iPhone 5c pre-order numbers. However, despite higher demand for its colourful model, it does not appear it will sell out.

The official Apple store still says it is possible to order one and have it delivered on launch day.
Both the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c are officially launched on Friday. iOS 7 is due to be released later today. Based on previous updates, availability notifications will likely go out around 6pm.
If you can’t wait, why not check out our reviews of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

BlackBerry Z30 set to launch within the week

BlackBerry Z30 set to launch within the week

BlackBerry plans to launch its flagship Z30 handset in Asia within the next week.
Reports emerged over the weekend that BlackBerry is planning to launch its next smartphone before the end of this week. A US launch is expected to follow between two to three weeks after.
There is currently no word on a UK launch.
According to Pocket-Lint, BlackBerry will be holding events in France, Malaysia and India on Wednesday September 18th.
Details about the BlackBerry Z30 first emerged in July. Leaks over the summer revealed that the handset will come with a five-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 by 768 pixels.
They also claim that the Z30 will be powered by a 1.7-GHz dual-core processor with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, Qi wireless charging and an eight megapixel camera.
BlackBerry has refused to comment on the speculation.

Apple to launch new iPads next month

Apple to launch new iPads next month

iPad Mini
Apple will unveil the iPad 5 and the iPad Mini 2 next month, according to reports.
It has previously been reported that the company is believed to be preparing another keynote for later this month.
However, at the time it was understood that it will be for the launch of OS X Mavericks and possibly some updates to its Mac line up.
According to French site MacG – Apple will hold its next keynote event on October 15th. It claims that alongside a new iMac, Apple will also take the wraps off its next generation iPads.
It is not unusual for Apple to announce products across two events in September and October.
Last year, it announced the iPhone 5 and new iPods in September, followed by the iPad 4, iPad Mini and new Macs one month later.
The French site also claims that stocks of iMacs are at an all time low at Apple stores and authorised resellers.
Any new Macs are likely to run on Intel’s new Haswell chipset.

Nokia hints at Thursday launch for Nokia 1020

Nokia hints at Thursday launch for Nokia 1020

Nokia Lumia 1020 review
Nokia has hinted that the Lumia 1020 will be available in the UK from Thursday.
The company made the announcement via its Twitter page. It’s cryptic tweet said “#Lumia1020 + UK = this Thursday”. It refused to clarify whether it mean the phone will be available from Thursday, or whether it will be releasing more details then.
View image on Twitter
Nokia’s Lumia 1020 smartphone’s standout feature is one of the most powerful cameras. The 41 megapixel is double the quality of the recently announced Sony Xperia Z1.
The PureView camera also comes with optical image stabilisation and a Xenon flash.
It features a 4.5-inch WXGA AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. The Lumia 1020 is powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and has 32GB of internal storage.
Despite critical acclaim, the phone struggled following its launch in the US.
Writing in a research note, Baird Research analyst William Power said that in his research he found that praise for the phone was high, but that consumers weren’t biting.
“Last week, we visited and contacted AT&T stores to gauge early sales of the Nokia Lumia 1020,” he wrote.
“Reps we spoke with were nearly unanimously positive about the device’s hardware, especially with the performance of the 41-megapixel camera.
"In contrast, those same reps were quick to point out that early sales were modest at best.”
Power said that the evidence suggested that the phone’s price ($300 in the US) had something to do with the lack of demand.
Nokia hasn’t announced an official UK price for the handset. The company said on its Twitter page that it will release more details on Thursday.

Apple investors bullish ahead of iPhone launch

Apple investors bullish ahead of iPhone launch

Investors are hoping that Apple Inc will unleash some of its old magic when it takes the wraps off its latest iPhone on Tuesday, with many building bullish share and options positions.
In the past two weeks, Apple investors have bought almost twice the number of call options than puts on three major U.S. option exchanges.
Apple on Tuesday is holding a media event at its headquarters in Cupertino, California, where it is expected to launch an updated iPhone model - widely referred to as the iPhone 5S - as well as a cheaper version of the device dubbed the iPhone 5C.
Investors are hoping that in addition to the phone unveiling, the company will also announce it has finally penetrated the world's largest wireless carrier China Mobile Ltd, which has over 740 million users.
Currently, Apple phones are supported by Chinese telecom carriers China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd and China Telecom Corp Ltd, which has a combined subscriber base of 266 million.
"Apple is effectively only selling to half the Chinese market today," said Brian Colello, analyst with Morningstar. "They can essentially double their sales in China quickly with China Mobile. So it's a big deal."
But Colello also cautioned that many investors could have already bought the stock in the hope of a deal with China Mobile and could sell off if the deal does not materialize in the near term.
Also, Apple shares typically sell off on major product unveiling and Tuesday's iPhone launch could mark the same trend.
Jefferies analyst Peter Misek expects choppy trading of Apple shares following the event as he expects "lackluster" sales of the phone.
"Lack of differentiation, elongating replacement rates, and smartphone growth shifting to the very low-end below the iPhone 5C price point" are the negatives, he said.
Apple shares are down 29 percent since hitting a record high of $702.10 in September 2012, fueled by fears of slowing growth and thinning margins amid competition from Samsung Electronics and other manufacturers of cheaper Android-based smartphones.
Apple's stock has seen upward momentum recently, sparked by hedge fund billionaire Carl Icahn's revelation last month that he had taken a large position in Apple and was pushing for the company to expand its program of share buybacks.
He has said the stock could rise to as much as $700 a share if Chief Executive Tim Cook pushed for a larger stock buyback.
Icahn, who is having dinner with Cook this month, said on Monday on CNBC television that Apple shares are "very undervalued" and buying the stock was a "no-brainer."
"If you look at the numbers, look at the multiples that are going on, look at the great cash flow they have you really have a lot of protection on the downside," he said.
Wall Street's 12-month target share for Apple ranges from a median estimate of $530 to as high as $825, according to Thomson One. The shares closed on Monday up 1.6 percent at $506.17.
High bar
While many options investors are taking an optimistic view, expecting Apple to build on recent gains that have driven the stock up nearly 25 percent since the end of June, some analysts cautioned the market may be overpricing expected volatility in Apple shares.
Ryan Detrick, senior technical analyst at options research firm Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati, Ohio, said that in the past 10 trading sessions beginning August 23, investors bought 1.98 call options on Apple compared with every put option purchased as a new position, citing data from three major U.S. options exchanges. That call-to-put ratio is higher than 94 percent of the readings over the past year, he said.
"This optimism sets a rather high bar and any disappointment could lead to profit taking or selling," Detrick said.
Options action in Apple on Monday suggests a swing of about 3.4 percent in the shares, based on the weekly options expiring this Friday. That is above the average 1.4 percent absolute one-day move for the previous five iPhone announcements, according to Credit Suisse data.
"If history is any guide, the release of a new iPhone will be a relative non-event for the stock," said Terry Wilson, equity derivatives strategist at Credit Suisse in a report on Monday.
A total of 407,000 options traded on Apple on Monday, about 100,000 contracts fewer than normal, according to options analytics firm Trade Alert.
Out of that, 275,000 were calls, contracts which grant the right to buy a stock at a specific price by a given date and are often used to express bullish sentiment. A put conveys the right to sell the shares at a preset price.
About 46 percent of the total volume was in the weekly options expiring this Friday, led by the $500, $510 and $520 strike calls, Trade Alert data shows.

Xbox One launch in 8 European countries pushed to 2014

Xbox One launch in 8 European countries pushed to 2014

xbox_one6.jpg
Microsoft said Wednesday it was delaying the launch of its new Xbox One console in eight countries, while moving ahead with a November release in 13 others.
In June, Microsoft said it would start selling the new videogame and entertainment console in 21 countries, but on Wednesday acknowledged their plan had been too ambitious.
The delays affect Belgium, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. The company said it hoped to launch the device in those countries "as soon as possible in 2014."
The 13 markets to get the Xbox One in November will be Australia, Austria, Brazil, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the United States and New Zealand, according to a statement from the Xbox team.
"At Xbox, our goal is to provide the best games and entertainment experience possible and the team continues to make great progress on delivering Xbox One," the statement said.
"While we wish we could launch Xbox One simultaneously in these (21) markets, there are many factors that determine the timing of specific market launches. This includes work to localize the Xbox One dash, incorporate additional voice and languages, and build partnerships to bring apps and meaningful local content to each country."
The beefed-up console is powered by software that allows for instant switching between games, television, and Internet browsing. Microsoft-owned Skype was also integrated for online group video calls.
Kinect motion and sound sensing accessories accompanying the consoles recognize users; respond instantly to commands spoken in natural language, and even detect a person's pulse.
Microsoft's new console will compete against Sony's new PlayStation 4, which also promises to combine its film, music, television and games in a home entertainment box. It is due to be released later this year as well.

iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C headed to China at launch, China Telecom reveals

iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C headed to China at launch, China Telecom reveals

apple-china-new-big.jpg
It's widely known that Apple is hosting an event on September 10 where the company is expected to announce the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C, but the company has not revealed any details except for sending a colourful invite. However, Chinese telecom carrier, China Telecom seems to have jumped the gun, putting out a post on micro-blogging website Weibo through its official account, advertising pre-orders for the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C.
The post, which was spotted by the Wall Street Journal was quickly pulled, however, screenshots of the post are still in circulation. The Weibo post said that China would be one of the first markets to receive the new iPhones, and that customers can pre-order it through a page set-up for the purpose. The post linked to the pre-order page that featured pictures of the two new iPhones.
iphone-5c-china-telecom.jpg
The post did clarify that no details about the phone had been made public but users will get the new iPhones when they start shipping. The images of the phones on the page appear to be mock-ups of the new iPhones as they don't match any of the recently leaked photos. The iPhone 5C is made to look like the iPhone 5 with different coloured back plate complete with white glass strips.
The pre-orders page is still up but has now been turned into a landing page with a message that says "Looking forward to..." and asks consumers to leave their names and telephone number to get notified. The website does not mention the iPhone, but as the WSJ report notes, the last part of the URL of the page reads "iphone5s.asp."
While it's known that Apple is now shifting its focus to China, especially with the low-cost variant of the iPhone, the iPhone 5C, as it's said to be holding a satellite event in Beijing, as per an earlier report, it marks a major change in its strategy as the iPhone usually takes months to go on sale in the Chinese market. This would be the first time that China features in the first phase of the iPhone's release, if the post is true.
Apple's been focusing on the Chinese market for quite some time as the world looks to the orient for emerging smartphone users, with little scope for growth left in the developed markets.
